It is known that the Russian State University of Geology Prospecting is the first higher institution specializing in geological prospecting disciplines in Russia. It was founded in 1918 under the name Moscow Mining College. In April 1930, the Moscow Mining Research Institute was divided into six independent universities, including the Moscow Institute of Geology and Prospecting. The Moscow Prospecting Institute helped the Moscow State (Lomonosov) University establish the Department of Geology (training experts in theoretical and applied basic research in land science fields). The department has several well-equipped bases for students' summer geological internships. In 2005, it was renamed the Russian State University of Geology Prospecting. It has 209 professors and associate professors, and more than 4,700 students in six departments - Department of Geology and Prospecting, Department of Geophysics, Department of Geological Hydrology, Department of Economic and Legal Support for Ore Deposits Development, Department of Prospecting and Development Technology, and Department of Ecology.
