On the afternoon of December 9, 2024, a high-level academic lecture entitled "Connecting Academic Research and Industry: Transforming Academic Research into Real-world Innovation" was successfully held here. This activity is led by the International Exchange Office and sponsored by the School of Intelligent Manufacturing and Electronic Engineering. It attracted teachers in the college to listen to Professor Zhang Ning, majoring in mechanical engineering at McNice State University in the United States, to share his cutting-edge experience and unique insights in academic and industrial transformation.
Cross-border dialogue between academics and industries: Professor Zhang Ning brings an international perspective
The lecture was hosted by Associate Professor Le Yinggao, Dean of the School of Intelligent Manufacturing and Electronic Engineering. At the opening session, he warmly welcomed Professor Zhang Ning's arrival and briefly introduced Professor Zhang Ning's academic background and achievements. Dr. Zhang Ning, a full professor of mechanical engineering at McNice State University, a director of the American Mechanical Society (ASME), and vice chairman of the Executive Committee of the Department of Fluid Engineering (FED). Since 2014, he has served as the chairman of the ASME Computational Fluid Dynamics Technical Committee, the chairman of the ASME-FED Honor and Award Committee, and the chairman of the Fluid Dynamics Technical Committee of the Institute of Engineering Mechanics (EMI). Associate Editor of the Journal of Fluids Engineering. The research mainly focuses on coastal hydraulic modeling and computational fluid dynamics, and leads a number of projects funded by the U.S. McNeese Corps, the National Science Foundation, the Department of Agriculture, and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. He has published a large number of articles in major international professional journals and preached them at international conferences.
Professor Zhang's report focuses on how to effectively transform academic research into industrial innovation to deal with complex engineering problems in the real world. Through vivid examples, it shows how academic research "lands and blossoms" in enterprises. He introduced the industry-education integration model of in-depth cooperation between the mechanical engineering major of McNice State University and the enterprise. By jointly preparing a training plan, this model gives students the opportunity to directly participate in the actual projects of the enterprise while learning theoretical knowledge. For example, students participate in the design and optimization of fluid mechanics models of factory environmental pollutants, factory building wind resistance analysis models, and in-house river flood models of McNice State University and other projects at the undergraduate level. These practical contents effectively improve students' engineering ability and provide technical support for regional social development.

In his speech, Professor Zhang also gave an in-depth explanation of the school's exchange student project and the specific mechanism of cooperation with enterprises, which provided useful experience for Wenzhou University of Technology in the future in the integration of international industry and education and academic cooperation. Professor Zhang emphasized, "The combination of academics and industry can not only solve technical problems in reality, but also stimulate students' enthusiasm for scientific research and cultivate their innovative ability in a multidisciplinary context." Wang Naini, deputy director of the International Exchange Office, said in her speech that this lecture broadened the international horizons for teachers of Wenzhou University of Technology and further promoted the international cooperation of the college in teaching and scientific research. She looks forward to establishing a closer cooperative relationship with Professor Zhang and his team in the future, and carrying out in-depth exchanges in the fields of industry-education integration and innovative talent training.
